Updated on June 1, 2012

Interactive Learning Websites

There are many educational websites that offer fun and interactive learning for children. The websites in this article introduce children to counting and number skills, from one to one hundred, as well as practice learning to tell time. For each website game, there are a list of suggestions to facilitate your child's learning experience. Remember it is important to play the games several times with children before directing them to try it on their own. You want to be available to offer support and instruction during the learning, in addition to enjoying the quality time it offers together .

Teach Numbers and Counting to One Hundred

Suggestions for Gamebone

In this game children are asked to find ten hidden bones on the 1-100 number square in less than a minute. Use the following suggestions to add some variety to the game and promote further learning.

  • Have children click and say each number out loud as they play the game.
  • Encourage them to click every box in order to count by ones.
  • See how many squares you can click in the allotted time. Try to beat your record.
  • Instruct children to click every second box and practice counting by two's.
  • Click every fifth box to practice counting by fives or every tenth box to count by tens.
  • Click all the numbers in one column and observe the number pattern.
  • Discuss all the different things that can be done in under one minute.

Suggestions for Splat Square

In this game children use colors to make splats on different number squares. The following are suggestions to maximize the learning opportunities when playing this game with your child.

  • Use the color yellow to count by twos. Use blue to count by five, or green to count by ten.
  • Ask your child to locate numbers and splat them with a specific colour i.e. Find the number 22 and splat it with blue. Find the number 48 and splat it with red.
  • Use the colors to make a pattern on the chart i.e. blue, red, green, yellow (repeated).
  • Ask questions that help teach adding and subtracting i.e. What number is three less than 10. Splat it red. What number is 5 more than 18. Splat it pink.
  • Create a picture on the hundred's square using the different colors.
  • Demonstrate multiplication i.e. 2x3 by using splats to color six squares.

Learn to Tell Time

The following game provides opportunity for children to learn about telling time. Children must read the time in words and then stop the clock when the hands reach their correct position. The following are suggestions to maximize learning when playing this game with your child.

  • Review the function of the minute hand and the hour hand.
  • Reduce the speed of the game if playing for the first time.
  • Read the time in words for your child if necessary.
  • For children new to telling time play the game for the child and have them assist.
  • For different times represented in the game, make connections to things people do at that time. For instance, six thirty in the evening is when people might have their dinner. Eight thirty in the morning is when many people travel to work or school.

Talk About the Learning!

Before, during, and after the learning session with your child it is valuable to discuss their knowledge about the activity and questions that they may have. Before playing each of the games ask your child what they already know about numbers or about telling time. During the session stop to discuss any new learning or further questions. When finished playing the games ask your child what they learned and how this knowledge will help them in the world. Most importantly...have fun!
